In the News: California lawmakers cheer Supreme Court decision to return census case to lower court, putting citizen question in jeopardy

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on its last day of its current term that the application submitted to add a citizenship question onto the 2020 Census will not be upheld and be sent back to the lower courts. This led to a victory for California politicians and others who understand that the addition of such a question strikes fear into immigrant communities, suppressing the participation in the official count. Both California Attorney General Xavier Vecerra and Governor Gavin Newsom celebrated the victory but agree that they “have our work cut out for us” as fear has already struck these communities.
