Hollywood Doesn't Fully Represent Asian Americans Yet

The spotlight on actors in Hollywood movies has been shiftly lately with movies such as Black Panther. It has created a movement where it provides a platform for a typically underrepresented communities. Progress has also been made for the Asian American community with blockbuster movies such as The Farewell, Crazy Rich Asians, Always Be My Maybe, Searching, Stuber, with more to come. Even so, the progress is not entirely inclusive as most of these stories and actors skew East Asian, leaving out the communities such as folks from South and Southeast Asian. The article uses AAPI Data to understand the Asian American population in the country. Jennifer Lee and Karthick Ramakrishnan’s article on the “Drawing Boundaries Around Who Counts as Asian American” is cited to further discuss the issues of misrepresenting all Asian Americans towards a selective Asian American narrative.
